Dennis Kalil was born and raised
in the culturally rich city of Bloemfontein, South Africa, on
September 10th, 1935. He studied geology at Rhodes University
and spent many of his early adult years working in this field.
This experience, combined with his artistic sensibilities, has
given him the unique perspective of the South African landscape
that is so subtly revealed in his work. |

He has studied with a
number of reknown artists, among them Gail Machanik, and exhibits
all over the country. He has also won much acclaim abroad, most
recently in the U.S. where one of his works of African wildlife
was selected in the spring of 2003 by the Louisiana State University
for their 16th International Exhibition on Animals in Art.
He travels frequently now, staying for periods of time in all
parts of South Africa absorbing the essence of the place before
re-creating its warmth, light, peace and ruggedness on canvas.
While he is best known for his landscapes and seascapes, as
well as his bold and powerful wildlife images, he has always
been drawn to the abstract as a way to express the mysteries
in his soul and his surroundings. These rare works, while radically
different from his other African-inspired art, are a vivid and
moving experience for those fortunate enough to see them firsthand.
